Jedna z nejoblíbenějších filmových adaptací Dumasových Tří mušketýrů je bezesporu ta, která byla natočena před více než čtyřiceti lety. Režisér Bernard Borderie obsadil do role d’Artagnana Gérarda Barraye, který vždy vrchovatě naplňoval představy o romantickém hrdinovi.
Snad všichni diváci vědí, co bude následovat, když mladý gaskoňský šlechtic, který opustil svůj rodný kraj, aby se v Paříži stal mušketýrem, vjede na svém omšelém koni do Meungu a střetne se poprvé s neznámým šlechticem s černou páskou přes oko, který bude tolikrát usilovat o jeho život. A všichni se těší, když si d’Artagnan v jednom odpoledni domluví souboj postupně s Athosem, Porthosem a Aramisem, protože pak uslyší větu, která mnohým zněla v uších celé dětství: „Jeden za všechny, všichni za jednoho!“
Více než dvě stě let uplynulo od chvíle, kdy se narodil Alexandre Dumas starší, jeden z nejčtenějších a nejčastěji překládaných francouzských spisovatelů. Dostalo se mu nejvyššího uznání. Jeho pozůstatky byly uloženy po boku nejvýznamnějších osobností v pařížském Pantheonu. Není se co divit, že převezení Dumasových ostatků doprovázeli právě jeho nerozluční čtyři mušketýři.
